Why HEIC is such a nuisance on Windows

Apple switched to HEIC years ago to save space. Windows still treats it as a foreign format.

Online converters the usual catch

  • Your photos get uploaded to a server you know nothing about — and stay there for hours or longer
  • Most cap you at 5 to 20 images a day unless you buy a subscription
  • Breaks when you are offline, on a plane, or behind a corporate proxy
  • Watermarks, forced sign-ups, and ads mixed into the download button

FormatMagician stays on your PC

  • Nothing is uploaded. The conversion engine runs inside the app on your machine
  • Drop an entire folder. No daily quota, no per-file limit
  • Output keeps the original filename, so IMG_4821.HEIC becomes IMG_4821.jpg
  • HEIC is one of 264 input formats the same tool already handles

Three steps

No account. No upload. No internet required.

1

Install on Windows

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. Once installed it keeps working with the network cable pulled out.

2

Drop your HEIC files in

Pick the Image scene on the left, then drag in files or the whole folder from your camera roll.

3

Hit convert

JPGs land next to the source files with matching names. No renaming, no manual sorting.

What actually happens to your photos

An online HEIC converter works by uploading your image, decoding it on someone else's machine, and sending a JPG back. That is fine for a stock photo. It is not fine for passport scans, medical letters, contracts, or pictures of your children. Even when the service promises to delete files after an hour, the file still left your computer.

FormatMagician never sends the file anywhere. The decoding happens in a local engine that ships with the installer. You can verify this the blunt way: disconnect from Wi-Fi and run a conversion. It completes normally.

One honest limitation: this is a conversion tool, not a photo editor. It will not crop, straighten, or apply filters. It converts formats, resizes, and handles batches — which is exactly what the HEIC problem needs.

Common questions

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
JPG is a lossy format, so some detail is always discarded. The app converts at high quality by default, and the visible difference on phone photos is minimal. If you need a lossless file, convert to PNG or TIFF instead — both are supported outputs.
Can I convert a whole folder at once?
Yes. Drag the folder itself into the list. There is no per-day or per-file limit, and output filenames match the originals.
Does it work without internet?
Yes. The conversion engine is local, so the app works with the network disconnected. That is also the simplest way to prove to yourself that nothing is uploaded.
Is there an account or sign-up?
No. There is no login, no email collection, and no telemetry. The privacy policy spells out what the app does and does not touch.
Is it free?
The app is free to download from Microsoft Store and the common image formats work without any unlock. A set of advanced formats belongs to the full version. Details are shown inside the app.
