CAJ to PDF
without installing CAJViewer
CNKI hands you .caj files that almost nothing outside China can open. Drop them in and get normal PDFs — searchable, copyable, printable, and readable on any device. Batch the whole download folder; nothing is uploaded.
Two bad options, usually
Install a Chinese-only reader, or push unpublished research onto a stranger's server.
CAJViewer / online converters the problem
- CAJViewer is Windows-only, Chinese-language, and often fails to install on newer systems
- It gives you a .caj to read on that one machine — no shareable PDF for your reference manager
- Online CAJ converters upload the paper, which is a real issue for embargoed or unpublished work
- Most free services cap you at a few files per day
FormatMagician local conversion
- One tool for everything — no separate reader just for CAJ
- Nothing uploaded. The paper is decoded on your own machine
- Drop the whole folder and convert dozens of papers in one pass
- Output is a normal PDF you can search, copy from, cite, and print
Three steps
No account, no internet, no Chinese-language interface to fight with.
Install on Windows
Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. Once installed, conversion keeps working with the network off.
Drop in your .caj files
Choose the CAJ scene on the left, then drag files in — or the entire CNKI download folder.
Convert to PDF
PDFs are written next to the source files, keeping the original base filename.
Why the text layer is the whole point
The PDF output keeps the text layer, so you can select a paragraph and quote it instead of retyping a screenshot. Ctrl+F works. Reference managers can extract metadata. A print-to-image PDF looks identical at a glance but is a picture — not searchable, not copyable, and blurry when zoomed.
This matters if you are writing about Chinese scholarship: you want the exact wording, and you want to find it again in six months.
